How To Stress Test a Computer

Computer stress test is a type of test that safely subjects your computer to function in an unfriendly environment. The test is composed of several purposely created stressors that progressively worsen the state of the environment until the computer’s system fails. In this way, a stress test helps in pointing out the weaknesses and vulnerabilities of your computer.

A computer stress test is recommended especially if you have recently built a new PC and you want to find out how heavy-duty its system is- more so ,if you plan to run a lot of applications at the same time. These programs can tax your computer and you might want to know how well your computer can hold-out. Here are the steps on how to do a stress test on your PC:

* Choose a computer stress test program that you can download from the Internet. Some have fees while others can be acquired for free. The most popular stress test programs are Prime95, IntelBurnTest, System Stability Tester, PassMark, SysMark, and CPUBurn. Like any other downloadable software, be sure to check user reviews, and read the specifications before downloading. Be discriminating. Don't forget to scan any file you have downloaded before running them. Some might have viruses and worms that can only make matters worse for your computer.
* Download your program of choice. Run the program and follow the instructions to have it installed. Once installation is done, run the program.
* Configure the settings of the stress test program. Most computer stress test programs will allow you to configure the set-up before the actual test is performed. Choose what type of test to conduct. Some programs offer RAM testing (to find out exactly how much RAM space you can use), CPU testing (to find out how tough and how fast your CPU can run), or both, and a lot of other tests which has increasing and varying scope. If you are more knowledgeable about computers, you can also customize the types of test to conduct according to your needs.
* Choose which drive you wish to test. Simply click on the corresponding box. You can choose to test just one drive (C drive). Or if you wish to choose all drives, check all drives.
* Choose what type of results will be shown post-test. Depending on the computer stress test program you choose, results can be configured to be shown automatically as a summary or in detail.
* Start the scan and let it run. Remember to check that your computer's ventilation and cooling systems are in order. Running stress test programs will definitely heat up your computer, so be wary of this. Check your computer's maximum CPU temperature in its BIOS. You can also download a program that checks your CPU temperature.
* Always read the instructions before proceeding with the stress test. This includes any message that pops up when running the program. These errors indicate the problems in your PC, and these should get checked promptly.

If you do get errors, contact the manufacturer of your PC. Make sure you have your warranty and verifications ready. Most companies accept returns for CPU and graphic cards, and some even offer RAM repair.
