How To Protect Your Facebook Profile Picture

Everybody is on Facebook! Who doesn’t spend a lot of time on Facebook? You can play games, connect with friends, make new ones and even let the whole world know what you’re feeling at the moment.

But did you know that there is practically no privacy on that social networking site? Notice how every so often you’ll get a personal message from a friend who’s got a link in the message asking you to “check it out?” And then later on, you’ll get another message from the same friend denouncing any solicitation message they sent earlier. This is because Facebook allows advertisers and third party app developers access to your information.

If you want better safeguards against your privacy and information, follow the suggestions below.

* Utilize Friend lists. The most underused privacy function is your Facebook profile’s lists. Each friend list you create for your profile has very specific privacy policies that can help protect your online information. Each time you upload content into your Facebook page, you will be asked which of the lists can the content be visible to. For example, you want to post pictures of your family but will only allow friends and family not to see this and not officemates because personal photos may affect your professional reputation. This feature is possible using the Facebook Lists.
* Disable public visibility. It is possible to remove your profile from any searches done on Facebook. There are two options to do this: one is to make sure that your name and information doesn’t show up on any search done one Facebook and to disable your public visibility.

To disable your public visibility go to Account > Privacy Settings > Search Visibility when the pop up option comes out, select “Only Friends” and save it by clicking “Save Changes.”

Selecting the options above will limit your visibility only to the network you belong in. And you can further limit the people who can view your information by selecting “Customize” and manually selecting the options.
* Limit personal news feeds. If there is one thing a lot of people in Facebook are guilty of it’s over sharing. There are some information that just doesn’t need to be broadcast online like the change of relationship status, certain information about your personal life, or your opinions about a movie or your opinions about anything in particular and everything in general. These news feeds will pop up in your contact’s walls and will let them know how you feel about certain things. Now, this would be good thing if everyone agreed with you but odds are you’re likely to ruffle a few feathers in posting often.

The best thing to do is to not get too emotional when posting anything on the site. If you’ve found something you’d like to share with everyone, double check if the content will not be offensive to anyone. This is kind of a tricky suggestion as a lot of things are subject to interpretation but as long as you exercise a fair amount of discretion about the things you post you should be fine.
