How To Reduce Blog Comment Spam

Blogging has become the easiest and most popular way to share information to the world. A blog allows any user, whether it is for casual or business use, to share thoughts and valuable information to other people. In the same way, a blog allows readers to interact with the author or owner of the blog through commenting. In some cases, these comments turn into long discussions and debates. And, of course, bloggers do appreciate it when it happens as they can gauge how effective their blog post is.

However, while there may be many legitimate people posting relevant comments on a blog, there will always be those comments that come from illegitimate sources. Most of these comments are nonsensical and even lead innocent users to malicious websites. These are called spam blog comments and are usually perpetrated by users that utilize spambots, programs that crawl around the World Wide Web looking for blogs to post comments onto. Obviously, these comments can be both annoying to the blog owner and the users that frequent your blog. Fortunately, there are a number of ways on how you can reduce and even prevent these spam comments.

* Filter through software. Some blogging platforms like Wordpress and Blogger actually allows users to install or activate filtering software to ward off spam comments. Yes, these free blogging platforms have seen the problem of spam increasing alerting them to provide more security to their users. By activating these spam filtering applications in your blog, you will actually automate the filtering of spam comments. This allows you to specify what type of comments you receive based on subject and source. The software will also allow you to manually override the filters should certain legit comments are warded away. Normally, the spam filter feature of a blog platform is open to those users that have either upgraded to a paid plan or have decided to use their own domain instead of using the free sub domain provided.

* Accept or reject as you see fit. All blogging platforms allow users to moderate any comments posted on their blogs. This allows you to review each comment before either accepting or rejecting it. Comments will only become published on your blog if you decide to do so. This is probably one of the most effective ways to ward against those irritating spambots. However, this process can be somewhat tedious, especially if you are bombarded by comments on a daily basis.
* Set up a register to comment policy. This is another security feature that can be quite beneficial for most bloggers. By requiring your readers to register on your blog in order to enable comment posting, you are actually filtering who can comment and who can’t. At the same time, you can capture a database of readers that you can reach out to for other matters, especially if you require each user to enter a valid email upon registration. Bear in mind that spambots are unable to register hence, by enabling this feature on your blog; you are effectively eradicating spam comments.

There you go, hopefully, these practical tips help you maintain a fast, efficient, informative, and highly interactive blog without having to worry about spam comments.
