How To Set Up a Facebook Account

Facebook is widely considered to be one of the most popular social networking sites on the web. It's a great way to interact with your friends by chatting, sharing pictures, and uploading videos. This step-by-step will teach you how to set up a Facebook account.

The very first thing you should do is make sure that your browser is updated to the latest version (Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 3, or Safari 4). There have been cases where some of the applications will not work if the browser has not been updated. Please note this step is totally optional, and will not affect you in most cases.

Next, enter the site. On the homepage, there should be a registration panel on the right side of the page. Fill in your personal data, then continue by clicking on the green button labeled "Sign Up".

You should then be prompted to a security check, and must type in the captcha-phrase. Do so and go on.

Sequentially, you are directed to a new page, which states there are 3 more steps to be completed. These are all discretionary, and if you would like to skip the phase, simply click the link on the bottom right of the screen labeled "skip step". You can always fill these out later when you first enter your profile page.

The first task is for Facebook to check your e-mail for contacts. It will ask you for your password, and by doing so, all your e-mail contacts that have Facebook will be sent a friend request. This step is perfectly safe, as Facebook will not use your e-mail for any other purpose.

Next, the screen should as you to upload a picture or take on with a webcam. If you are to upload one, remember that the picture cannot be more than 4 MB in size. This picture will be the one displayed as your avatar, so choose wisely!

The third and final step on the page is to fill out your personal information. By doing so, this data will be shown on your profile, unless you opt to hide these records.

Now you enter your profile page. On the screen there should be 3 more steps. These, like the one before, are also optional, and do not really have a significant impact on your Facebook experience.

The top one asks you to register your mobile phone. I find this very helpful, as it eliminates additional captcha-phrases when you send a friend request or join a fan group. It is strongly recommended that you have a high quantity or unlimited amount of texting on your mobile device in order to complete this step, as it sends you a text message notification for about everything under the sun.

The step that follows is probably one you will be using most frequently on Facebook. It asks you to type in a name, and the search engine will bring up a group of profiles matching that. This is also useful for searching groups to join or apps. The search bar at the top of the screen does these things too.

Following, is the last obligation you are asked to complete. These are your privacy settings. Basically, if you want only your friends to view your profile, use that setting.
