How To Set Up an FTP Site in Vista

FTP sites or File Transfer Protocol web pages are very useful tools for those who are in need of transferring huge amounts of files from one computer to another. This is especially useful if there are large amounts of information such as videos or images that needs to be relocated. Since email services will not be capable of sending these files through their servers, most people would rely on an FTP site to do the transfer. If you are on Vista, then you are in luck. In most cases people need to have a third party FTP application to do the setup but Vista has a built in FTP wizard which shall help you accomplish this. You just need an Internet connection and a computer to be able to do this.

* Creating a network connection. Your very first step is to go to My Computer and select the “Add a Network Connection” option. This can be done by right clicking on the My Computer display window. From here, you can select Next and the “choose a custom network location” option. This means that from here, you can specify the name of the FTP site that you want to access. You just need to follow the setup wizard that will pop out into your screen and just input the necessary information as you go. When you have created everything else, you are ready to protect it with a password.
* Keying in the password. Since all FTP sites have passwords so that they can control who enters and uses the files, this would also be the time to key in the password to your selected FTP site. When you have entered your password, you will be given access to the FTP site and you can just browse as normal the files that are uploaded there. Remember that you can also contribute to the library of files there and it is not just a one way distribution of information. Do not share the password of the FTP site until you are sure that the owner is ok with you sharing the information.

It is as easy as that! There will be no need to install a separate program that will allow you to create your own access to an FTP site. FTP sites are useful for transporting vast amounts of information. If you are turning over documentation from one group to another, this would be very helpful. If you are submitting applications or other big chunks of information such as photographs and edited videos, then this would also be the way to go. Just make sure that you have enough space in your hosting solution for all the information that you are storing in the FTP site. If there are items that you know will not be needed anymore then you can just move them to an archive folder so that when you need to delete some things or remove them from the FTP site to be stored somewhere, you know which files are easily disposable. This is helpful to keep your FTP site efficient and optimized.
