How to Stop a Runny Nose

Cold and flu season often bring with it a bevy of runny noses. If you're prone to allergies, then you likely experience a runny nose all year long. Whatever the cause of your dripping nose, there are steps you can take to get rid of it. Most cures are temporary solutions. If you have a runny nose that continues for several weeks, see your doctor. He will help you determine the cause of the issue and then address it properly. In the interim, there are various ways to stop your runny nose.

1. Take an antihistamine. Available over-the-counter, antihistamines work well for runny noses that are caused by allergies. Opt for a non-drowsy antihistamine, as regular ones will make you sleepy.

2. Purchase cold medication if your runny nose is caused by a cold or virus. The medication will dry up mucus, eliminating your runny nose. Follow the specific medication's instructions regarding usage.

3. Use nasal spray. Available in any drug store, you spray the medicine directly up your nose. When you have a runny nose, the tissue inside your nose is swollen. Nasal sprays help to reduce the swelling, thereby improving the issue. You should only use nasal sprays for a few days. If used for longer, they can worsen your nasal symptoms.

4.Sleep with a humidifier in the room. Dry air worsens a runny nose, while moist air helps to thin mucus. When you use a humidifier, the air will be more moist.

5. Mix 1 teaspoon of salt with 1 cup of warm water. Put some of the mixture into an eyedropper. Tilt your head back and release a few drops into your nose. As you breathe in deeply, the salt water solution will irrigate your nasal passages. Repeat the process several times to fully cleanse your nose. You may also purchase saline nasal drops at a drug store.

6. hew a small piece of ginger root. Swallow the juice that you extract from the root. This home remedy has been shown to increase circulation and reduce mucus. Repeat the process three to four times a day to stop your runny nose.

Tips & Warnings
Be gentle when you blow your nose, as it will be raw and irritated.

Avoid alcohol and caffeine while you have a runny nose. Both can lead to dehydration, making your mucus thicker.
