How To Use Wireless Internet

Wireless Internet allows you to use and access Internet service without having to physically plug your laptop or cell phone to a modem. It’s convenient since you can surf the Internet just about anywhere as long as there is a router available.

Using wireless Internet is easy. Here’s how to do it.

* Have an Internet service provider. To get started, you must first have a broadband Internet provider in your home. Many companies provide this service for a minimal monthly fee. When you sign up, you will be provided with a small box device that you plug cables into. This is the modem. This is what transmits the signal.
* Purchase a router. Now, if you want to surf wirelessly, then you need to get a modem. If your broadband service provider doesn’t provide a unit, you need to buy one yourself. This is easily available at computer stores and many leading retailers. A router is a device that transmits the broadband signal wirelessly. Popular brands of routers are Belkin and Linksys. If you want a router that you literally just need to plug so get access, then purchase the one made by Apple. You simply plug the router in an outlet, connect the cable to the modem and you’re good to go.
* Connect the device. You must link the modem to the router with a cable. Plug one end of the cable in one of the ports in the modem to the router.
* Turn on your computer. Plug in both devices and both should automatically turn on since a modem and a router don’t usually have an on switch. You should see lights on both units.
* Join the network. Get your laptop or computer and turn it on. As you start to boot, your computer should automatically locate the Internet signal. If it is the first time you are using the wireless Internet, it will ask you if you want to join the network. You may also click on View all available networks so that you can find your network and sign on. Click on yes, ok or connect. Also, it should take you to a window wherein you can customize your Wi-Fi. For example, you may want to protect your network with a password so that not everyone can use your network. Keep in mind that when you log on again in the future, as soon as the network recognizes that you are a returning user, you may no longer be asked for a password.
* Start surfing. You can now surf the Internet. However, be mindful of some sites. If you have young children, you should install some parental controls on your computer.

If you cannot connect to the Internet, check your cable connections first. Also, you need to verify with your broadband Internet service provider that you have a signal. In some cases, you may not be able to connect because there is no signal in your area at a given time. If you have confirmed that you have Internet service in your area, then you need to check if your router is working. Call the 24-hour customer service hotline of the manufacturer of the router. They should be able to guide you. In some cases, you need to reconfigure the settings to get the best available signal.
