How To Make My Own Domain

A domain is the address that points to your website. It can be a .com., a .org, or a .net address or any other extension that is allowed. A domain is bought and registered after you have thought out your website’s name. Below are tips on how to make your own domain.

* Think of a very good name for your website. It should embody what your website is all about and show a glimpse of its content. Think of the present and the future when thinking of a name for your website and go to a site like GoDaddy to check if the name has been taken or still available. Think of at least ten to twenty names before you check. Once you have found out that a name you have on your list is still available make sure that you reserve it right away as domain names are created and bought with lightning speed. If you have big plans for your website, do what the others are doing and buy several domain names that are related to what you have to prevent others from stealing your carefully thought out name. You can let go of some of the domain names later or sell them.
* You can check the names of domains and see if the names you have chosen are already take by going to the WhoIs website. You can type the web addresses you have listed in the search box provided. Note that almost all domain names for sites using personal names have already been bought.
* Register the name with any of the domain name registrars such as Register.com, NetworkSolutions.com or WebPalace.com. As you fill the online form you will be asked if you want to have your domain name registered in private. This means that your name, your email address and contact information will not be made available in the registry of domain names to prevent spamming. Pay the required amount that can range from ten dollars to thirty five dollars. This fee is good for a year and you can renew your domain name registration annually. You will be asked to provide the name of your web host. If you do not have one, request the domain name registrar to park your domain name until you have found a web host and can provide the static IP address and web server address needed.

* Look for a web host after you have registered your domain name. This is where the content of your website will reside. The web host will be the one to provide you the space for your web pages, and the tools and support to build your website as well as your own email accounts, if needed. It is not necessary that you choose the company where you registered your domain name as your web host, too. If you are engaged in e-commerce, look for a web host that can help you integrate a shopping cart into your website. You can take a look at Powweb, Site Build It, Website Tonight or Turbo Charged. You can take a look at this chart to compare some web hosting sites.

Make sure that you check all the features and the terms and conditions of the domain name registrar as well as the web host before signing up with them. Do not be immediately enticed by a lot of freebies. Make your research first get all the information you need. Even if it is just a difference of a few dollars, the services and features can greatly impact the performance of your website.
